Hope Valley Line

Ticket info and tips for this trail

  • Planning is essential. You must match the train times with the pub opening hours, to avoid being ‘stranded’ at a station until the next train.
  • An off peak return from Sheffield to Chinley costs £10.30.
  • An off peak return from Manchester to Sheffield costs £18.30.
  • It is possible to visit each station on an off peak ticket provided you keep travelling in a forward direction.
  • A better ticket for this trail if you are starting from Sheffield is the ‘Derbyshire Wayfarer’ which currently costs £11.60 and allows you 1 day’s unlimited travel on all busses and trains within Derbyshire. You can also travel via Sheffield. This ticket can only be purchased from staffed stations, or Derbyshire tourist information centres – not on the train
  • A group ‘Derbyshire Wayfarer’ costs £21 for 2 adults travelling together.
  • When undertaking this trail from the Manchester end, the cheapest method is to purchase the Manchester Wayfarer at £11, which takes you as far as Grindleford, and to then get an off peak return from Grindleford to Sheffield at £4.30.
  • Check for any alterations to the train timetable for engineering works etc via the Northern Rail website.
